You can track whether your home building company shows up in ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews in two ways: by hand, by asking the AI tools your buyers' questions and logging the answers, or with an AI visibility tracking platform that asks those questions every day and reports who gets named. Manual checks are free and worth doing today. A tracking platform is what you need to make real decisions, because AI answers change from day to day.
Why you can't just check once
Ask ChatGPT the same question twice and you may get two different lists of builders. AI answers shift with the wording of the question, the AI tool used, the buyer's location and the day. One screenshot proves nothing. What matters is how often you are named across many answers over time. That number is called AI visibility. For the full definition, read What Is AI Visibility for Homebuilders.
Option 1: The manual check (free, 30 minutes)
- Write 10 buyer questions. Use the words your buyers use. For example: "Best home builders in Sarasota," "New construction homes under $450,000 in Pasco County," "Which builders in Tampa include a pool?"
- Ask each question in ChatGPT, Gemini and Google. On Google, note whether an AI Overview appears and who it names.
- Log the results in a spreadsheet. For each answer, record whether you were named, your position in the list, which competitors were named, and which websites the AI linked to.
- Repeat weekly. Use the same questions every time so you can compare.
Our 15 minute visibility check is a quick version of this you can run today.
The limit is scale. Ten questions across three tools is 30 answers a week, and you only see a small slice of what buyers see.
Option 2: An AI visibility tracking platform
This is how we track AI visibility at CEA Marketing for our own brand and for our builder clients. An AI visibility platform runs a set list of buyer and industry questions through ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode and Gemini every day, then reports the results. Here is what to look for:
- Visibility: the share of AI answers that mention your company.
- Position: where you appear in the answer when you are mentioned. First is best.
- Competitors: which other builders and companies are named on the same questions.
- Sources: which websites and pages the AI pulled from and cited. This shows you what the engines trust.
- Topics: results grouped by theme, so you can see where you are strong and where you are missing.
- Recommended actions: technical fixes and content gaps, ranked by expected impact.
What we learned tracking AI visibility every day
Running this process on our own brand taught us four things that changed how we work:
- The sources matter more than the score. Knowing which comparison article or industry page the AI keeps citing tells you exactly where to earn a mention. Often the fastest win is getting a third party page to describe you accurately.
- Your website may be invisible to AI. Some sites build their pages with JavaScript, and many AI crawlers do not run it. The AI sees a blank page. Check what a crawler actually receives before you write another word of content.
- Getting cited is not the same as getting named. An AI can quote your page for a definition and still recommend someone else. Make your brand name part of the answer sentences, not just the page title.
- Patience beats panic. Wait one to two weeks of daily data before judging any trend. And read visibility and position together. Showing up in more answers while slipping a spot in position is normal as you break into new questions.
How to turn tracking into results
- Pick the questions where competitors are named and you are not.
- Look at which pages the AI cites for those questions and why they win: direct answers, specifics, FAQs, comparison tables.
- Write or update the page on your site that should win that question. Answer it in the first two sentences.
- Fix the technical basics: crawlable pages, schema, an llms.txt file, one H1 per page.
- Recheck that question two to three weeks after the page goes live.

Frequently asked questions
How can I track if my home building company shows up in ChatGPT?
Start by asking ChatGPT the questions your buyers ask and logging whether your company is named, where it appears and who else is listed. Repeat weekly with the same questions. For reliable data, use an AI visibility platform that runs your questions daily across ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Overviews and reports trends.
How do I know if my builder shows up in Google AI Overviews?
Search Google for the questions your buyers ask and check whether an AI Overview appears at the top and whether it names your company or links to your site. Because AI Overviews change often, track the same questions over several weeks, or use a tracking platform that checks them for you every day.
What is a good AI visibility score for a home builder?
There is no universal benchmark yet. Compare yourself to the builders you compete with on the same questions. If competitors appear in more answers than you, look at which sources the AI cites for them and close those gaps. Judge trends over at least one to two weeks of daily data, not single days.
